Looking for an easy DIY wreath to add to your beach decor? This shell wreath beach craft project is so simple to make that you can create your seashell wreath on a weekend or in an afternoon.
You can use shells you brought home from your beach vacation to make these wreaths. Or you can buy an assortment of different spiral shells, starfish, sand dollars and clamshells online or at your local craft store. Just be sure the shells have enough flat surface area to attach to the wreath.
I used a grapevine wreath to coordinate with my coastal farmhouse decor. But you can use other wreaths, like straw, styrofoam or floral foam to create a different look. With these types of wreaths, you'll typically need to cover the entire wreath so you'll need more shells than with the grapevine wreath.
The beach theme makes this wreath perfect for a coastal Christmas decor---or to add a beachy touch to your door or wall decor all year long.
DIY Shell Wreath Tutorial
MATERIALS NEEDED
- assorted seashell in different sizes
- 3" - 5" white finger starfish
- 16" - 18" grapevine wreath
- hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- beachy wired ribbon (I used 1.5" width)
How to make seashell wreaths
Start by dry fitting the starfish and other shells on the wreath and arranging them the way you want them to sit on the finished wreath. Since each shell is a slightly different shape, you'll need to adjust them until you find the best placement for each shell.
I like using one larger starfish as the main focal point and adding the other shells around it. Be sure to leave a space where you can attach the ribbon.
Once you're happy with your design, you can start gluing. Working with one shell at a time, place the glue on the wreath where you want the shells to sit being careful not to let the glue drip over the sides.
I found working with the grapevine wreath it was much easier to place the glue on the wreath, rather than on the shell. With more solid wreaths, it may be easier to put the glue on the shells.
Tie a loop or bow with the ribbon to hang the wreath. If you are using an over the door hanger to hang the wreath without making holes in the door, make sure your ribbon is long enough for the wreath to hang at the right height for your door.
