Bowl of guacamole with tomatoes, cilantro, lime and tortilla chips.

Looking for an easy guacamole recipe? This homemade guacamole with tomatoes is quick, fresh, and simple to make. It's the perfect easy appetizer for parties, game day, holidays, or any gathering.

Bowl of guacamole with tomatoes, cilantro, lime and tortilla chips.

This easy guacamole with tomatoes is a fresh, simple dip made with ripe avocados, juicy tomatoes, jalapeño, red onion, lime juice, and fresh cilantro. It takes about 10 minutes to put together. I make it every time people come over because it's easy and everyone loves it.

I like this guac as an appetizer, but it's also great as a topping for tacos, fajitas, or chili. You can keep it chunky or mash the avocado a little more for a smoother dip, depending on how you like your guacamole.

    Ingredients you'll need

You only need a handful of fresh ingredients to make this easy guacamole recipe.

Cilantro, peppers, tomatoes, lime, avocadoes, purple onion, salt and pepper.
    • Ripe avocados: Choose avocados that give slightly when gently pressed.
    • Roma tomatoes: Roma tomatoes have less juice than many other varieties, so they add tomato flavor without making the guacamole too watery. Be sure to scoop out the seeds before dicing.
    • Jalapeño: Adds a little heat. Remove the seeds and ribs for a milder guacamole.
    • Red onion: Finely diced red onion adds crunch and a sharp, savory flavor. You can substitute white onion if you prefer.
    • Lime juice: Brightens the guacamole and balances the richness of the avocado. Always use fresh squeezed, not bottled. You can taste the difference.
    • Fresh cilantro: Adds fresh herb flavor. You can substitute fresh parsley if you're not a fan of cilantro.
    • Salt and pepper: For seasoning.

How to make guacamole with tomatoes

This guacamole comes together quickly, so have your ingredients chopped and ready before you start.

Mash the avocados: Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the avocado into a large bowl. Mash with a potato masher or fork, leaving it as chunky or smooth as you like.

Avocado halves on board next to bowl of mashed avocadoes.

Combine everything: Add the diced tomatoes, onion, jalapeño, cilantro, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.

Taste and adjust: Give the guacamole a taste and add more lime juice, salt, or pepper if needed.

    Variations to try

    • Add seafood: Fold cooked, chilled chopped shrimp, lobster, or crab meat into the guacamole. Season the seafood with Old Bay for extra flavor before adding it, and fold it in at the end.
    • Add tropical fruit: Diced mango or pineapple adds a sweet contrast to the avocado, lime, and jalapeño.
    • Add roasted garlic: Roast the garlic until soft, then mash and stir into the guacamole to taste for a mild, sweet garlic flavor.

    Serving suggestions

Serve this guacamole with tortilla chips for an easy appetizer or snack. It's also great alongside tacos, fajitas, chili, or any Mexican-inspired dinner. Pour a classic margarita to go with it and you have taco night covered.

Set the bowl out with the rest of your game day food and it will be one of the first things to disappear.

You can also dress it up for a holiday party. For Halloween, arrange black olive slices on top to make a simple spider garnish. For Christmas, sprinkle pomegranate seeds over the top and add a few cilantro leaves for a festive dip.

    How to store

Guacamole is best served soon after it's made, but you can store leftovers in the refrigerator for a day or two.

To help keep the top of the guacamole from browning, press plastic wrap directly against the surface of the dip, pressing out as much air as possible. Cover the bowl and refrigerate.

The avocado pit isn't necessary for preventing browning. What matters is limiting the exposure to air. If the top darkens slightly, just scrape off the top layer before serving.
